Designer Spotlight: Stephanie Tuliglowski

Fears Construction has collaborated with a few designers over the years to help homeowner complete their projects. One of those designers is Stephanie Tuliglowski of SJT Interiors. The two companies came together after a client of Tuliglowski's shared the contact information for Fears Construction to help complete their project.

We had the opportunity to ask Stephanie some questions about how she got into the business and how she began working with Fears Construction.

Stephanie grew up with a passion for art and design, always finding some kind of artistic outlet for her abilities. She eventually turned that passion into a 25 year long career that is currently still going strong with her company SJT Interiors.

However everyone has to start somewhere and Stephanie was no different. Having grown up in the Naperville/Plainfield area, she graduatedfrom Waubonsie Valley High School before heading to Champaign for school. While there she studied Commercial Art and later got her license in Cosmetology.

Stephanie began freelancing for several businesses, including "Strictly Golf" and "Lettuce Entertain You". She worked on designing logos and advertisements for these companies. She also worked on design teams for “Lynda Meyer” In Joliet then later “Still Water Gallery” in Naperville and finally “Maggie’s Place” in Shorewood, IL.

During this time Stephanie was also teaching faux finishing classes and drawing portraits of people for commission.

"When I was assisting designers on sights, I learned everything I could and was later asked to help in accessorizing and choosing fabrics, art, etc. This gave me the confidence to go out on my own where I was noticed by established publishers/designers on social media and asked to be a part of a book and several magazines, including Martha Stewarts “Real Simple,” “Enlightenment Magazine” where several of my rooms were featured, as well as having my rooms (Home) featured in a chapter of “Christmas at Designers’ Homes Across America” and then recognized by a handful of holiday magazines, one of which was “Southern Lady.”"

When working with new clients Stephanie likes to see what personal items have a significance for those individuals. This helps her establish a style that the client would lean towards.

"I welcome pictures and ideas that one has that gives them a sense of comfort for their personal space. Art, fabrics, area rugs, these things also help me to see what colors the homeowner tends to feel comfortable with."

She went on to explain that she enjoys working in the main living areas of her clients homes. It is where they spend most of their time and is the best space for clients to showcase their style. That's not to say she doesn't enjoy working on smaller projects as well.

"[My favorite part of being a designer is] bringing a sense of comfort and joy to my clients and helping them determine the potential for their home/room."

A helpful tip Stephanie has for homeowners is to be realistic about the projects they are planning. Stick to a budget and only keep the items you absolutely love in the space.
